Homemade Tomato Sauce

There is something to be said about homemade tomato sauce using fresh ingredients and balancing it perfectly! Here at Culinary Occasions we have created a delicious version of homemade canned tomato sauce! This versatile sauce may be used as a pasta sauce, added to mayonnaise for a quick chip dip, used to flavour your favorite casserole or simply as a ketchup burger topping!

Makes about 500ml of sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic

  • 1 tablespoon chopped ginger

  • 1 medium onion chopped

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 28oz can of crushed tomato

  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 2 teaspoons salt

Method

  • Caramelize the onions in the vegetable oil in a saucepan.

  • Add the spices, garlic and ginger and cook for a couple of seconds.

  • Add the remaining ingredients.

  • Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.

  • Taste for salt, add more if needed.

  • Blend until smooth.

  • Store in the refrigerator for 2 weeks!
